Nervous About the Needles? Read This First.

It's the number one reason people put off booking acupuncture — and it's usually based on a mental image of a blood-draw needle. That isn't what this is.

They're About the Width of a Hair

Acupuncture needles are roughly 0.16–0.30 mm across — you could fit around 40 of them inside a standard hypodermic needle. They're solid, not hollow, and single-use sterile.

Most People Feel Almost Nothing

The common description is a brief tap, then a dull heaviness or warmth around the point. Many patients fall asleep during the retention period. Sharp pain is not normal — tell your practitioner and the needle comes out.

You Can Start With Fewer

Tell us at intake that you're nervous. Your practitioner can start with a handful of points instead of a full treatment, keep you sitting up, or use non-needle techniques like cupping and gua sha for the first visit.

Is Acupuncture Actually the Right Booking for You?

We'd rather you book the right treatment than book ours. Find your situation below — sometimes the answer is RMT or cupping, and we'll tell you so.

What a Session Actually Looks Like

Rather than describe it, here's the clinic and the treatment room. Two minutes will tell you more than a page of text about whether this feels like somewhere you'd be comfortable.

If anything in the video raises a question, call before you book — we'd rather answer it now than have you sit through a treatment feeling uncertain.

Your First Visit, Step by Step

Around 60 minutes. Here's exactly what happens, so nothing is a surprise.

1

Intake & TCM Assessment

Your practitioner asks about your main concern, when it started, sleep, digestion, stress, medications and medical history. In Traditional Chinese Medicine this also includes pulse and tongue observation — it's quick, and it shapes where the needles go.

2

The Plan — Explained Before Anything Starts

You'll hear which points are being used, roughly how many needles, and how long they stay in. This is the moment to say you're nervous, that you'd like to start small, or that you'd rather stay sitting up.

3

Needle Insertion

Single-use sterile needles, inserted quickly. Most people feel a brief tap and then a dull, heavy or warm sensation — that sensation is expected. Sharp or burning pain is not, and it's fixed immediately if it happens.

4

Retention — Usually 20–30 Minutes

You rest with the needles in place, lights low. A call bell or your practitioner stays within reach. A lot of patients fall asleep during this part.

5

Removal, Aftercare & an Honest Timeline

Needles come out painlessly. You'll get aftercare guidance and a realistic answer on how many sessions this is likely to take — including if we think another treatment would serve you better.

Treatments We Offer

Several are often combined within one appointment, based on what your assessment shows.

Traditional Acupuncture

Full TCM assessment and point selection for pain patterns, stress, sleep and digestive concerns.

Facial Acupuncture

A gentler, cosmetic-focused protocol using very fine needles on the face, usually combined with body points.

Electro-Acupuncture

A mild electrical current applied to inserted needles — often chosen for stubborn muscular pain.

Cupping, Gua Sha & Moxibustion

Non-needle TCM techniques, used on their own or alongside acupuncture. About moxibustion →

Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture hurt?

For most people, very little. The needles are roughly the width of a hair — solid, not hollow, and single-use. You may feel a brief tap on insertion, then a dull heaviness or warmth around the point, which is the expected sensation. Sharp or burning pain isn't normal; tell your practitioner and the needle is adjusted or removed straight away.

How do I know if acupuncture is right for me?

It may be worth considering for recurring pain, stress-related tension, sleep concerns, tension headaches, or symptoms that haven't improved with rest and stretching. If your issue is simple muscle soreness, RMT or cupping is usually a more direct — and cheaper — starting point. Call and we'll tell you honestly.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance in BC?

Most extended health plans include acupuncture performed by a registered acupuncturist. We direct bill to major providers where your plan allows it. Coverage amounts and annual limits vary, so it's worth checking your own policy before booking.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

No — you can book directly in British Columbia. Some insurance plans do require a referral before they'll reimburse, so check your policy if you plan to claim.

How many sessions will I need?

Acute issues often respond within 3–5 sessions. Long-standing concerns typically need a series of 6–10, spaced one to two weeks apart. Your practitioner gives you a realistic estimate after the assessment rather than committing you upfront.

Can I book acupuncture for ICBC-related symptoms?

Yes. ICBC covers a set number of acupuncture treatments after a motor vehicle accident without pre-approval. Bring your claim number and accident date. If you're unsure whether to book acupuncture, RMT or both, call us first.

Can I get an appointment this week?

Usually. With five registered acupuncturists on the team, availability is much better than at a single-practitioner clinic — same-day openings come up most weekdays. Live availability shows when you book online.
