Sports Massage in Vancouver — Built Around Your Training Week

Registered massage therapy for runners, cyclists, lifters and team-sport athletes. We time the work to your training load, not to a generic 60-minute template — and we bill ICBC and most extended health plans directly.

Not sure whether you need sports massage or regular RMT?

Book sports massage when the goal is performance or recovery around training — pre-event preparation, post-session soreness, a niggle that keeps returning, or getting range of motion back after an injury. The therapist assesses movement first, then treats the tissue that is actually limiting you.

Book standard RMT when the goal is pain, injury, or an insurance claim that needs clinical documentation. Both are delivered by registered massage therapists, so both produce receipts you can submit. The difference is what the session is organised around.

Sports Massage vs Deep Tissue vs Regular Massage

All three are available at 560 Kingsway. They are not interchangeable — the wrong booking wastes your session and your insurance coverage.

Who books sports massage here

Five Patterns We See Most Weeks

You do not need to be competitive. Most people booking sports massage at 560 Kingsway train for themselves.

Runners

Calves, soleus, hip rotators

Mileage builds, then something in the calf or lateral hip starts talking. Work is biased toward the chain that is actually loaded, and re-tested before you leave.

Cyclists

Hip flexors, T-spine, neck

Long hours in one position shorten the front of the hip and lock the upper back. Sessions usually combine tissue work with position-specific mobility.

Gym & lifting

Shoulders, lats, thoracic

Overhead work suffers when scapular mechanics are limited. We treat, then re-test overhead reach so you can feel the change rather than take our word for it.

Team sports

Ankles, knees, groin

Cutting and landing sports load joints unevenly. Common after a season restart, a tournament block, or a return from time off.

Desk + training

The 9-to-5 athlete

Eight hours seated then a hard evening session is its own injury pattern. Treatment addresses both the desk posture and the training demand.

Post-collision

Getting back to sport

Returning to training after a motor vehicle injury needs a graded approach. See ICBC RMT treatment for how claims and direct billing work.

The part most clinics skip

When You Book Matters As Much As What You Book

A deep session 12 hours before a race helps nobody. Tell us where you are in your week and the intensity gets matched to it.

48–72h before Pre-event prep Lighter, circulation-first, mobility-focused. Nothing new, nothing aggressive. Never the day before.
24–48h after Post-event recovery Once acute soreness has peaked. Flushing-style work plus gentle range-of-motion restoration.
Recurring issue The niggle that returns Assessment-led. We look at what is compensating, not only where it hurts, and give you homework between sessions.
Off-season / base Maintenance block The best window for firmer work on long-standing restrictions, because you have room to be sore for a day.
Your first 60 minutes

What Actually Happens in the Room

Every treatment happens in a fully enclosed private room — not a curtained bay.

0–10 min

Intake and goal

We map where it hurts, what your training week looks like, what you are working toward, and agree on one thing to change today. If you have an event date, say so.

10–15 min

Movement assessment

A short set of movements to find what is actually limited — overhead reach, knee-to-wall, hip rotation — so the session targets the restriction rather than the loudest symptom.

15–50 min

Treatment

Pressure and technique matched to your tissue response and to where you sit in your training week, with frequent check-ins. You stay clothed or draped throughout — you control what is uncovered.

50–60 min

Re-test and homecare

We repeat the assessment so you can feel the difference, then give you two or three specific things to do before your next session. Written down, not recited.

Techniques used

Hands-On, Plus Instrument-Assisted When It Helps

Most sessions are manual. Where a restriction is broad, superficial or slow to respond, an instrument gives a more controlled input than a thumb — and it is easier on the therapist's hands, which matters if you book regularly.

  • Targeted deep tissue work on loaded muscle groups
  • Myofascial release and trigger point therapy
  • Joint mobilisation and assisted stretching
  • Active and passive range-of-motion restoration
  • IASTM — instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilisation, bookable as its own 60-minute session
  • Cupping as an add-on where circulation is the priority — see cupping therapy

Because RMT, acupuncture, cupping and TCM all happen in the same rooms here, you can combine treatments in one visit instead of booking twice.

Cost and coverage

What a Sports Massage Costs in Vancouver

Rates depend on session length and therapist. Our current rates are kept in one place so they are never out of date on a service page.

Before you pay out of pocket, check three things

  • Extended health. Most BC plans cover registered massage therapy. Non-registered massage is not covered.
  • ICBC. If your issue follows a motor vehicle collision, treatment is usually covered and we bill ICBC directly.
  • Direct billing. If your provider is supported, you pay only the portion your plan does not cover.

When sports massage is not the right call

Book something else, or see a physician first, if you have an acute injury from the last 48 hours with swelling or bruising, a suspected fracture or a joint you cannot bear weight on, an active infection or fever, a skin condition over the treatment area, or a new blood clot. If you are pregnant, on blood thinners, or managing a cardiovascular condition, tell us when you book so the session is adjusted.

Massage therapy supports recovery and mobility. It is not a substitute for diagnosis, imaging or medical care.

Frequently asked

Sports Massage Questions

How much is a sports massage in Vancouver?

Rates depend on session length and therapist. We keep every current price on a single rates page rather than repeating them across the site, so what you see there is always current. Sports massage delivered by a registered massage therapist produces a receipt you can submit to extended health, and ICBC claims are direct billed.

Is sports massage covered by insurance or ICBC?

Sports massage performed by an RMT is registered massage therapy, so most BC extended health plans cover it. If your issue follows a motor vehicle collision, ICBC generally covers treatment and we bill them directly — see ICBC RMT treatment. Non-registered massage is a separate service and is not eligible for either.

How soon before a race or competition should I book?

48 to 72 hours before is the usual window, and the session stays lighter and mobility-focused. We do not recommend firm work the day before an event — that is when it is most likely to leave you feeling flat. For recovery, 24 to 48 hours afterwards is generally better than the same evening.

Will it hurt, and will I be sore afterwards?

Firm pressure can be uncomfortable, but it should never be something you have to brace against — tell your therapist and the pressure changes. Mild soreness for 24 hours afterwards is common with deeper work, similar to the day after a hard session. Drink water, keep moving gently, and avoid a maximal training day immediately after.

Do I have to be an athlete to book sports massage?

No. Most people booking it here train for themselves — running, gym, cycling, weekend sport — or sit at a desk all day and then train hard in the evening, which is its own pattern. What matters is whether the session should be organised around training and movement rather than general relaxation.

What is IASTM and do I need it?

IASTM is instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilisation — a smooth tool used to work broad or superficial restrictions with more control than fingers allow. It is available as its own session or as part of a treatment. Most people do not need it; your therapist will suggest it only if your assessment points that way.

How often should I book?

It depends on your training volume and what you are working on. Someone managing a recurring issue often starts weekly or fortnightly, then spaces sessions out. Someone using it for maintenance during a base block may come monthly. Your therapist will suggest a frequency after the first assessment rather than selling you a package up front.

Can I book same-day?

Often, yes. There are several registered therapists working at 560 Kingsway, which is why short-notice appointments are usually available — including evenings Monday to Thursday and both weekend days. Call (604) 620-6560 for anything urgent; online booking shows live availability.

What should I wear?

Come in whatever is comfortable. For sports work, shorts and a t-shirt make movement assessment easier. You stay draped throughout and you decide what is uncovered — if you would rather stay fully clothed, say so and the treatment is adapted.
